Softly, Softly: Task Force is a police based drama series which ran on BBC 1 from 1969 to 1976. It was a revamp of Softly, Softly, itself a spin-off from Z-Cars. The change was made partly to coincide with the coming of colour broadcasting to the BBC's main channel BBC1. The programme was due to be called simply Task Force, but reluctant to sacrifice a much-loved brand the BBC compromised this so it became Softly, Softly: Task Force.

One day, Detective Kumada, who belongs to Section 4 of the Shinjuku Chuo Police Department's anti-gang team, receives information that a bomb has been planted somewhere in Kabukicho...

Set in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district, a town that never sleeps, a detective in charge of the Investigation Section 4, known as "Marubo", takes on the underworld, including numerous fights and terrorist attacks. T The Kinugawa clan has been decimated. Behind the scenes, the shadow of the Black Dragon is hidden. At the same time, a threatening letter arrives with an arson threat addressed to the Governor of Tokyo, and the security system is strengthened, but someone makes the first move. The confused police suspect that someone is leaking internal information...

Kumada is arrested for the murder of the Chief. He denies the charge, but the bullet removed from the Chief's body matches the bullet from Kumada's gun, and the situation becomes increasingly unfavourable. Just then, Kumada receives a threatening phone call on his mobile phone, threatening to assassinate the Governor of Tokyo. Furthermore, a war breaks out between the Black Dragon and the Kinugawa clan...

Antigone Corday is an aspiring social media influencer. She is mourning the recent death of her brother, Jeremiah, a well-known pundit and voice for progressive causes. Soon, she receives a mysterious package in the mail--a pre-recorded video of Jeremiah. He claims to have uncovered a conspiracy that will throw her worldview, and the fate of the planet, into question.

Kumada is mistaken for the culprit at the scene of an assassination attempt on the governor of Tokyo and is escorted away. Meanwhile, a bomb threat is announced at the police station and the station is blown up. Kumada finally returns to the investigation amid suspicions that there is a spy among his own people. He sets out to get to the bottom of the case.

Sakuma, who was supposed to be dead, is alive. This brings the terror case to a sudden development. Kumada continues his investigation and tries to find a solution with the help of Kajiyama of the Kinugawa gang. Meanwhile, at the task force, a surprising relationship between the perpetrators and the police comes to light during the identity investigation.
